For all his holiness, the Teacher seemed opposed to religion. This befuddled his disciples, who equated religion with spirituality. They asked him about his position on the matter. He said, “Religion today deals in punishments and rewards. This breeds fear and greed – two things destructive to spirituality.” Later, he spoke, “Religion based on rewards for doing good is like tackling a flood with water or burning a house with fire.”

*Adapted from Anthony de Mello.

Much taught in religion, whether regarding present or future rewards, or karma, can lead to a subtle over-focus on self. Much religion so focuses on getting what “I” want or think "I" deserve, if “I” do the right things, that it creates the opposite of compassion.

What increases a sense of separation is not spiritual, and not purely religious. Good religion is the servant of spirituality. Good religion will lead toward harmony and selflessness in goodwill to all creatures.

Are there elements of your religious or spiritual path likely encouraging selfishness? What aspects of your Path encourage you to transcend self in harmony with others? Do you believe a promise of blessings or rewards is essential for a healthy religion or spirituality?
